Paneer, a staple in Indian vegetarian cuisine, is a mild, white cheese also known as “Indian cottage cheese.” Its origins are debated, with theories suggesting influences from Persian, Afghan, and Portuguese cultures.Β
The term “paneer” is derived from the Persian and Turkish word “peynir.” The modern method of paneer preparation, which involves curdling milk with acids like lemon juice, was likely introduced to India by the Portuguese in the 17th century.
Despite its varied historical roots, paneer has become a beloved ingredient in Indian cuisine, especially at celebrations and gatherings.
